Mom is still not released but I came home to sleep. She's doing much, much better! I'm pretty sure she'll be home in the next two or three days. In hospital time, that's about a month ;)

As for writing, I'm eager to get back to it. Eager to get back to the crew!

Thanks to those of you who have sent messages of support. You are the best.

I'm behind with Strange Trouble.

It is moving forward but slowly! On Christmas my mom got sick and was admitted to the hospital, so I stayed there with her. Today one of my sisters went to stay with her so I could come home. I'm too tired to write. On the bright side, my mom may come home tomorrow. Monday at the latest.

Maybe because of the stress or maybe because it's what writers do, I'm in a bit of a funk. My confidence in the books has taken a hit. My confidence in my writing has taken a hit.

Likely it's just because I'm drained.

I'll go read some good reviews and remember that I write because I love it. The rest is not up to me. And I may need to print that out :)

5 Star Goodreads review by Tammi
for Blood and Bite

"Rune and the Shiv Crew are back and they are kicking ass. Maybe two seconds after Rune comes back home after trying to get her mental shit together things go BANANAS! This is a non-stop thrill ride that had me flipping through the pages on my kindle at lightening speed.

The Crew! This is just a great group of characters. They are all flawed and not perfect little beings. (Even though one person showed his douchy side and I’m not happy about that at all. Hmpf!)

There’s not much I would complain about except that I want to know more about the Shiv Crew. How they came to be, what is their background, and etc.

This book was as good, maybe even better than the first book. I can’t wait to see what happens in the third book."

Hi guys--
I wanted to let you know where I am with Strange Trouble. I'm still writing every day, even if the meter in the sidebar isn't moving.
I had to go back and cut and do some rewriting. On the bright side, that means less editing when the book is finished, as I do a lot of that while I'm writing. At least I have on this particular book.
I'll update more later. In the meantime, tell your friends to check out Shiv Crew. And if they've already read Shiv Crew, Blood and Bite is waiting.

Five Stars for Shiv Crew

Five Stars for Shiv Crew

HELL YEAH!!!!!! Now this was a damn good book.

This might not have been the best book I read but what this book did was make me remember how much I love Urban Fantasy. Shiv Crew echoed the great UF books of the past before everything turned into paranormal romance with sparkly vampires and weak-ass shifters. There is nothing weak, sparkly or sweet about this book and I love that.

Shiv Crew definitely followed some of the typical UF traps. Hot little girl, hot guys surrounding her, hot little girl is all powerful and alpha love interest but this doesn't hurt the story at all. There are many little unique things about this book but the one thing that I love was Lex, a beautiful black female who may or may not have a love triangle with twins (if she doesn't, she needs to). As a black female I always rejoice when I see a minority character that is not stereotyped.

If you read UF from ten years ago and you wish that UF would go back to that awesomeness definitely check out this book.

Another One for Blood and Bite

It's been a very long time since I could tell you that I not only thought book two in a series was as good as the first, but actually took the high level that was set in that first book and danced a few miles higher!

To be fair and give warning...if you like the sparkley faction of vampires or really want your shifters to be soft and snuggly then these books aren't for you.

This author has written some seriously dark, demented, twisted shit folks! And it's absolutely fantastic!

As I said in my review for book one, 'Shiv Crew' Rune Alexander we get a heroine that is so damaged and broken that it stabs nails through your heart. She's still damaged...still achingly broken...but she is working....with the help of her crew / family to try and learn to live with the agonizing pain that has previously tried so hard to destroy her.

Book three, 'Strange Trouble', is in the works right now and can not, CAN NOT friggin get here fast enough!

~DeLane from Goodreads

Thank you so much for the review, DeLane. I'm so glad you love the crew! :)

I found this review of Shiv Crew on Goodreads today. It's words like these that motivate me when I'm being hammered with doubt. To the fans of the series, thank you for letting me know! You're one of the biggest reasons I write.
And to DC13, this means the world to me. Thank you! :)

"Gut-wrenching Brilliance!
Laken Cane is remarkable!
I can't even think of the right words to say how absolutely amazing this book is!
Rune Alexander gives Chess Putnam a run for the most damaged, self destructive heroine ever written. I wasn't even ten chapters in before my heart was broken for her!
Amazing writing. Fabulous story.
Am starting book two now!!

Blurb for Book 3, Strange Trouble

Book 3 coming soon...

A baby necromancer calls her mother from the grave, starting a zombie infestation Rune and the crew are not prepared to handle.

But as always, they jump headlong into battle--a battle that will lead into some of the darkest moments of Rune's life. Moments that will shatter her tenuous grip on sanity and make her long for the man whose abuse allowed her to function.

And when she falls, the berserker is there to catch her. To bring her back. To give her what she needs.

The zombies are just the beginning. Worse even than the zombies is what comes after--a nightmare witch named Damascus, a horrific decision, and death.

Always, death.

As she is given another jagged piece to the puzzle of her past, Rune knows that despite its best attempts, life doesn't have the ability to destroy her--though she offers it all the help it might need.

With Strad Matheson and the crew behind her, Rune will stride through hell, horror, and a world not her own to show the monsters why Shiv Crew is the scariest group of warriors they will ever face...

~Strange Trouble, book three in the Rune Alexander series.

ManicReaders Review of Blood and Bite

New review from ManicReaders reviewer Merrylee

“I am my monster, and my monster is me.”

Once in awhile you encounter a series of books that are so fresh and exciting you just can’t get enough of them. You do more than enjoy the story lines, you make friends with the characters and get so involved in their lives you forget where your own life begins and ends. And sometimes, when your life isn’t the best, books like these—like the Rune Alexander series—lift you up from the depths of your despair and involve you in something more beneficial than your own gloom. This series has done that for me, thus far on two occasions. Perhaps it can do the same for you.

In River County, Ohio, Shiv Crew has a new boss in Elizabeth Peel. Rune has kept her promise to her best friend and Shiv Crew’s office assistant, Ellie, to get her head on straight with some in-patient counseling. Raze has spent his month in jail for impulsively giving into his rat phobia and skewering a rat shifter. And the berserker, Strad Matheson, has taken off for Pennsylvania on personal business he keeps secret from Shiv Crew, even Rune, who’s come to mean more to him than he ever counted on. What he brings back with him knocks Rune for an emotional loop, making her step back to reconsider their developing relationship. But that’s not the end of Rune’s troubles. The vampire master of Spiritgrove, Nicholas Llodra, has gone mad. He’s been an ally of sorts, and now Shiv Crew has been tasked with destroying him—all while Rune fights to save a child from a mad man threatening his life. Just when she thinks things can't possibly get worse, she discovers an awful truth about herself. Her blood. And the unintentional consequences of her bite.

More emotional but a bit less dark than book one, Blood and Bite by Laken Cane continues the non-stop action and intrigue from Shiv Crew, while expanding the relationship between Rune and Strad. After her month with the shrinks, Rune is dealing a bit more logically with her inner “monster,” but she’s still and probably always will be a bit messed up…I hope. It remains a part of who she is as the leader of Shiv Crew and what she means to each and every one of them. The on-again, off-again liaison between Ellie and Levi is also touched upon. While Levi fights his affections for Ellie, Ellie secretly endures the pain of unrequited love. There’s so much emotion between these two, I’d love to see some up close interactions between them in upcoming books. Speaking of which, there’s an unresolved issue at the end of Blood and Bite that provides a great cliffhanger leading into book three, Strange Trouble. Its release can’t come too soon for me.

~ManicReaders reviewer Merrylee

Thank you so much, Merrylee!
